Presentation address by Lydia Shale

Chancellor,

Ellie Kildunne stands before us today as one of the most influential and inspiring athletes of her generation; a West Yorkshire born trailblazer whose journey from Keighley to the world stage has transformed the visibility, ambition and cultural impact of women’s rugby. Her story is rooted in our region: shaped by Keighley Albion, Keighley RUFC and the Yorkshire pathway, and carried forward by a determination that reflects the very best of our community.

Ellie’s rise to global prominence has been nothing short of extraordinary. In 2024, she was named World Rugby Women’s 15s Player of the Year, a landmark achievement that recognised not only her exceptional performances, but the integrity, humility and professionalism with which she plays the game. That same year, she dominated the Six Nations, being voted Player of the Championship, leading the tournament in tries and metres carried, and captivating audiences far beyond traditional rugby circles. Her attacking creativity, instinctive brilliance and composure under pressure marked her as a generational talent.

Her influence extended even further on the Olympic stage. Selected for Team GB at Paris 2024, Ellie brought her Red Roses excellence to a global multi sport audience, inspiring millions, especially women and girls, who saw in her a powerful example of who belongs in elite sport. Her visibility and authenticity have opened doors for countless others, expanding the narrative of what women’s rugby can be.

Then came the defining moment of 2025. At the Women’s Rugby World Cup, Ellie played a pivotal role in England’s victorious campaign, scoring the opening try in the final and setting the tone for a historic triumph. Her leadership, consistency and creativity throughout the tournament reinforced her status as one of the most influential players in the modern game. That same year, the public recognised her extraordinary impact by voting her runner up for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award.  This was followed by the award of an MBE in the King’s 2026 New Year Honours List, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to English rugby.

Yet Ellie’s significance reaches far beyond trophies. She embodies the 映客直播’ core values of collaboration, compassion, inclusivity and integrity. She consistently credits teammates, speaks openly about resilience and pressure, advocates for girls’ confidence, and uses her platform to challenge stereotypes and expand who feels welcome in sport.

Here at Leeds University Union, in our work championing Women’s+ Sport, Ellie’s name emerges time and time again. Students cite her as a role model whose excellence and authenticity show them what is possible. She represents the shift we are working to accelerate: a sporting culture where women and non binary athletes are visible, valued and empowered to lead. Her journey mirrors the aspirations of so many of our students who are striving to break barriers and claim their place in sport.

Ellie Kildunne is not only a world class athlete; she is a catalyst for change, a champion of Yorkshire resilience, and a role model whose influence will shape the next generation.
