Students quiz AI business expert

Students have received top tips on building a career in Artificial Intelligence and machine learning from a leading Google executive.

Alex Rutter, Managing Director – Artificial Intelligence (AI) for UK, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) at Google Cloud spoke to students about his skills and professional development while sharing valuable career advice.   

The event has really inspired me to think about what good leadership is, and to hear about the skills Alex developed along the way was really insightful.

Alex’s role involves working on cloud technology from a retail perspective with a specialist AI team looking at generative models and machine learning. 

He was interviewed by Rebecca Padgett, Associate Professor at , before taking part in a Q&A session with students. The session was a part of the executive guest speaker series, which bridges the gap between . 

Speaking after the event, Alex said: “It was a privilege to come and talk to students about how AI is being used in business today, the skills they will need and a few ways to keep up with this ever-changing and exciting new world.

“It was fantastic to meet such talented, curious and engaged students at the 映客直播 and I am excited to see this next generation embracing technology on their journey to becoming the business leaders of the future.”

Abish Rodriguez Palma, an international student from Mexico, who is currently studying for an  at LUBS, said: “This type of event was exactly what I was looking forward to when coming to Leeds. It was enriching to have this contact with the real world environment and it was so useful to see our theory turned into reality in the workplace. 

“It made me think about what other skills I need to develop to be in his shoes one day. The event has really inspired me to think about what good leadership is, and to hear about the skills Alex developed along the way was really insightful.

“It also gave me a broader vision of the opportunities that I could go into after my studies.”

A full lecture hall of students were able to ask Alex about the ethics and costs of AI. They also gained insight about human behaviours and how we search more deeply than ever before. 

Mir Zayed Bin Abdul Kader, who is studying for a , said: “The talk from Alex really motivated me to aim higher. The event was really interactive and student-friendly as I got to ask Alex a question, which really helped me with my thoughts around my dissertation topic on integrating consumer cognitive behaviour with AI. 

“While I was initially hesitant about the feasibility of my dissertation topic, Alex’s insights into generative models provided the clarity I needed. He encouraged us to see AI not as a replacement for human behaviour, but as a tool to embrace for deeper consumer insights."

Associate Professor Rebecca Padgett added: “This series was built to spark meaningful conversations between industry leaders where experience is shared, curiosity is encouraged and ideas turn into action. 

“The employability of our students is important and connecting industry and education together is a crucial part of the jigsaw. 

“I’m hugely thankful to Alex for sharing such insightful knowledge about employability skills, interview tips and a positive outlook for the possibilities for graduates in their future careers as the next generation of global citizens.”
